I have a pretty good picture that captures the timing marks and #1 at TDC in the same view, but the machine shop tells me if it was wrong the piston would be notably lower in the cylinder at TDC. Since there have been many posts over the years regarding 78 / 79 I am wondering if there is a chance that the factory actually had an incorrect engine letter on some blocks in this era. I am not sure if the head casting was unique to 258, but 3227258-1 is what I have. One theory is that the crank was replaced with a 258 crank. With dot - dot timing #1 is at TDC, not notably below and not above. I installed it and set the timing yesterday. Most threads would say I really have a 232, based on engine serial number "E". I now know I have a head 3227258-1, a block 3227445 H1 and an engine SN 910E05. This has led me down the path of what head, what block casting etc.

As most of you know the heads are different. As I am reassembling it, I decided the valve cover on the 1987 258 would be better. I took my 1974 258 to the shop where they bored it 30 over, milled the head, turned the crank, etc. 2018 Ask of the Same Old Question Which EngineĪs a new re-builder I am learning a lot.
